1. Compute (−5) × 6.
Show answer
Answer: A) −30
Different signs → negative. Multiply absolute values: 5 × 6 = 30. Result: −30.
2. Find the missing integer: (−9) × ___ = 72.
Show answer
Answer: A) -8
The product 72 is positive, so the missing factor must be negative (same signs). 72 ÷ 9 = 8, so the missing integer is −8. Check: (−9) × (−8) = 72.
3. Evaluate using the distributive property: (−15) × 12 − (−15) × 2.
Show answer
Answer: B) -150
Factor out −15: (−15) × (12 − 2) = (−15) × 10 = −150.
4. Apart from 1, which integer gives 1 when it is multiplied by itself?
Show answer
Answer: C) −1
(−1) × (−1) = 1, because two negative factors give a positive product. So −1 is the only integer besides 1 that is its own multiplicative inverse. Checking the others: 0 × 0 = 0 and 2 × 2 = 4, neither of which is 1.
5. What is the value of (−12) × (−7) × (−3) × (8 − 8) × 25?
Show answer
Answer: B) 0
Simplify the bracket first: 8 − 8 = 0. Any product that contains a factor of 0 is 0, no matter how many other factors there are or what their signs are, so the value is 0 with no multiplying at all. Missing the bracket and grinding out 12 × 7 × 3 × 25 = 6300 with three negatives gives the trap answer −6300.
