Key idea: Rationalising the denominator
To clean up a fraction with a surd in the denominator, multiply numerator and denominator by something that makes the denominator rational.
**Single surd**:
21 → multiply by
22 →
22.
**Sum/difference with surds**:
3+21 → multiply by the **conjugate**
(3−2):3+21×3−23−2=(3)2−(2)23−2=9−23−2=73−2.
The conjugate trick uses the difference-of-squares identity
(a+b)(a−b)=a2−b2.
