A decimal shows parts of a whole using place value after the decimal point: tenths, hundredths, thousandths. 3.47 means 3 ones, 4 tenths and 7 hundredths. Most decimal mistakes come from lining up the digits wrongly.
Formulas
Place value
3.47=3+104+1007
Multiplying: the answer has as many decimal places as both numbers together
0.6×0.07=0.042(1+2=3 places)
Dividing by a decimal: move both points the same number of places
3.6÷0.12=360÷12
Worked examples
Example 1. Add 4.5+2.37.
Line up the decimal points and write 4.5 as 4.50.
4.50+2.37=6.87.
Answer: 6.87
Example 2. Subtract 7−2.45.
Write 7 as 7.00.
7.00−2.45=4.55.
Answer: 4.55
Example 3. Multiply 0.6×0.07.
6×7=42.
There are 1+2=3 decimal places in total, so the answer is 0.042.
Answer: 0.042
Example 4. Divide 3.6÷0.12.
Multiply both by 100 to make the divisor whole: 360÷12.
360÷12=30.
Answer: 30
Common mistakes
Thinking 0.45 is bigger than 0.5 because 45 is bigger than 5. Compare 0.45 with 0.50: 0.5 is bigger.
Lining up the last digits instead of the decimal points when adding or subtracting.
Placing the decimal point in a product by copying it from one of the numbers instead of counting the decimal places.
